Guest Interview with Scott Konig

We have players from all walks of life attending D&D in a Castle from ambitious adventurers to shy questers. Hailing from Queens is one of our long standing veterans Scott Konig, who came to the first D&D in a Castle event and continues to come every year! This second interview in our interview series shows the event from our guest’s perspective.

How did you end up coming to D&D in a Castle in the first place?

I listened to an episode of Tabletop Babble that had James Introcaso interview the D&D in a Castle team. It sounded awesome and I was going through a difficult time in life and was like let’s do it!!!!!

Which events of D&D in a Castle were you at, and who was your DM?

The very first Maze Arcana Castle in France with James Introcaso as my DM. The second year I went to the Nerdarchy Castle with Dave Friant as DM and also Langley Castle with James Introcaso as DM.

Thinking back to your DMs at the Castle, what stands out for you about them and their campaigns?

James Introcaso and Dave Friant are amazing DMs. Whether it is them taking from your character’s backstory, telling a unique story, or rolling with the curve balls players throw at them. Here are some brief teasers of what to expect:

Castle 1 — James set us up in a What if scenario that was What if Tiamat was victorious in Tyranny of Dragons. Adventured in a Chromatic Dragon ruled world, sold our souls to Bel at one point, and took down Tiamat and Zariel for the finale.

Castle 2 — On day 2 , my halfling fighter/rogue touched a gem he shouldn’t have. Dave took me aside and had me make a saving throw, failing and I became a thrall of an undead elder brain. I learned who the big bad was and would betray my group when commanded too.

So you had to betray your group, did that add an extra layer of interest to the game?

Totally.  Fast forward to Day 3 and last session all three tables like 17 players got together to take on the Elder Brain and minions. I get to play on the bad side. My first turn I betray my group action surging to take down the groups wizard. No one saw it coming!

Tell us about the very last campaign you took part in.

Castle 3 — The party all played monstrous characters freedom fighters. I played an amnesiac Doppelganger wild magic sorcerer. The DM did an amazing job of bringing everyone’s backstory up in the game at a different section throughout the campaign. He gave life and backstory to the whole experience.

Did you attend any of the one-shot evening campaigns?

Yes, I played D&D one shots with Stefan Pokorny, Vee Mus’e, and Lysa Penrose. These games happened during the evening and were equally as memorable. I also got into a very late night game of Ten Candles run by Elisa Teague. First time I played Ten Candles and it happened in a chapel in a castle!!!!

The whole time was non stop gaming and a great time!!!!

What kind of gamer are you generally? Do you play one consistent character, or switch it up a lot? Do you prefer theatre of the mind, or do you love the minis and terrain? What type of game are you most into?

I switch up characters for different games. I’d like to have played each class for a good amount of time. I still have a few to go!

I love to use or have Minis, terrain, maps, and props when possible. Theatre of the mind is great though and definitely the ideal option at times. I like to have all three pillars of exploration, combat, and role playing in the games I play or run.

Do you think you will return to D&D in a Castle? If so, what draws you back?

Definitely!!!! I am signed up for three sessions this September! I want to have an amazing experience in a cool location with great people!

What lesson have you learned from D&D that you wish more people understood?

Cooperation in life and in games!!!! D&D is cooperative storytelling with mechanics to it. Sure your character’s motivations may go against another player’s, in a moment that can make for an interesting story. At the end of the day when it is all said and done you put things aside and work together, that is where the game shines. The cooperation among players creates lasting memories of heroics, successes and even the occasional failure.
